A portrait of Hokusai’s daughter, Sakae, at the age of 20, depicting her inner feelings and the world she created
Katsushika Oi, also known as Sakae, was a painter and daughter of the famous ukiyoe woodblock print artist Hokusai. Although an accomplished artist in her own right, she is unable to escape the shadow of her genius father. This is a rich depiction of her life and work, and the world she lived in during the late Edo period, when Japan stood at the crossroads of east and west.
