Exploring the issue of same-sex marriage through translated theatre

Japanese director Kaori Nishio is known for her inventive use of theatrical spaces to ask intellectual yet tough questions. While she is well regarded as a playwright in her own right, having been nominated for the prestigious Kishida Kunio Drama Award, she here creates a new work analyzing themes and elements of “8”, the American verbatim play about same-sex marriage by Academy Award-winning writer Dustin Lance Black, and which she previously directed as a staged reading in Tokyo in July. While “8” is based on an actual court case where gay couples in California fought for their rights, what if the same thing happened in Japan? “Invisible Neighbors” zooms in on the overlooked segments of society, the people who have dropped out of the common “story”.

Kaori Nishio

Dramatist, Director, Leader of Bird Park

Born in 1985. After a childhood in Malaysia she researched Shuji Terayama and Shogo Ohta at university, founding Bird Park in 2007. Since then she has handled all of the group’s scriptwriting and directing. Her work explores space and language, always approaching subjects from a slightly oblique perspective to shine a gentle spotlight. She has created performances in a range of local sites in Tottori, Kitakyushu, Hiroshima and Osaka, including a former warehouse, an old Japanese house and a disused shop. She was nominated for the 58th Kishida Kunio Drama Award.
