Through its previous five installments, Festival/Tokyo (F/T) has established itself as a leading performing arts festival representing not only Tokyo and Japan, but the whole of Asia, spreading new values in artistic creativity facing up to society today from Tokyo to the world. Many of the works produced and performed there have toured to other cities around the country and also to Asia and the world, influencing the global arts.
This is the sixth edition of F/T and, in order to enhance the festive atmosphere of the city and bring out Tokyo's unique attractions, the programs include numerous large-scale participatory projects in the Ikebukuro area. These include an opening event free for all to attend, flash mobs and outdoor performances, all of which will deepen associations with the local community and businesses, and also increase the permeation and reach of the festival.
The Main Program will once again inquire into the fundamentals of theatre ・drama and fiction, searching for new forms of contemporary narrative. Its line-up includes numerous works exploring new formats to tell stories that respond to changes in social conditions, and works that re-interpret classical texts and myths from the contexts of today.
The Emerging Artists Program, taking place for the fourth time, has now become the leading platform of its kind, a stepping stone for younger artists to enter mainstream recognition. This year sees nine companies and artists from six countries and regions, selected from 137 applicants from across Asia, and will be an opportunity for sharing dialogue and critique with the next generation embodying Asian diversity.
Via these initiatives, Festival/Tokyo aspires to disseminate the cultural appeal and presence of Tokyo out into Asia and the world, and contribute to improving and enlivening the creative potential of the city's residents.
