Performing Arts Festival launching from Tokyo
Director Takuya Murakawa makes experimental work confronting the contradictions of society and humanity. Following "Zeitgeber", his acclaimed contribution to the F/T Emerging Artists Program last year, which saw the relationship between carer and patient recreated by a performer and audience member, now comes his debut in the main F/T Program.
His theme this time is "dialogue". Through making a documentary on the 2011 Tohoku disaster Murakawa felt the limitations and poverty of language. The present is a vacant site where words have been reset and we must seek out new forms of expression. On stage we see the dialogue between actors who have visited the disaster zones, a sign language interpreter translating their words, and a transcriber making notes on what is said. Each has their own form of expression and narration. The conversation is awkward and stumbling, but revealing fresh possibilities and meanings of words. Like new-born babies we acquire language again and start to converse.
